What can I say about this book? I think it’s kind’ve underrated. Looking at this book through the lense of the intended audience. (I.E a teenage girl with possible anxiety) It’s an incredibly beautiful read with a lot of different layers and plot hooks. Stiefvater does an excellent job in establishing the story and sprinkling world building. She only builds up what is necessary or what could be added as a bit of a bit, and I can honestly respect it.
Dee’s characterization does reek of late 2000’s “Not like other girls” stereotype with no friends aside from the one guy friend, BUT, I think Stiefvater pulls it off incredibly well in giving an explanation for it. Dee is actually pretty competent, defends, and speaks up for herself.
Looking at it without the lense of a teenage girl, I can see why people have their issues with it. (Especially the age gap that’s never addressed). The writing can come off very fanfictiony at times, Dee’s attitude towards herself and the environment she’s in. And of course, the dreaded love triangle. But I don’t think any of it would stop me from recommending it to a teenager interested in a little romance with supernatural elements.
This book may not be to your taste and that’s ok. I take issue about it when people say “how can anyone like this”. It is probably not for your demographic and that is fine. All in all, if you can just get immersed in the story, and pretend you’re a girl going through the throes of highschool, I would really recommend it.

What to expect of this book:</b
1. A not-like-other-girls protagonists, who obviously is super talented and introspective and deep... but has 0 friends outside the guy that serves to create cheap love triangle drama.
2. Cringy Lyrics, metaphors and overall late 2000s writing.
3. Interesting worldbuilding, but extremely vague, leaving you with 1000 questions and 0 answers.
4. Beautiful descriptions and mesmerizing writing (something in which Maggie will always be incredibly at)
5. Cars, Irish folklore, music, interesting take on faerie, 90% vibes, 10% plot. I.e any Stiefvater book.
6. Boring insta-love romance with a 1000 years old guy (thing that is rarely if never addressed) that is supposed to be beautiful and give soulmates vibes... instead of stupid teenage infatuation.
7. Very confusing ending in which all the conflicting that's been building up gets solved extremely easy.
8. this is more of a pet peeve of mine... BUT WHY ARE THEY ACTING AS IF "Luke Dillon" IS A DIFFICULT NAME TO PRONOUNCE??? THE PROTAGONIST'S NAME IS LITERALLY DEIDRE MONAGHAN, BFFR .

Honestly really like this. I’ve read some reviews saying Dee Was a pick me and honestly i don’t really see it. At least right now. The pacing does feel like something out of twilight but I’m not going to bash it. It’s a product of its time.
