I’m really struggling through this book, and if it wasn’t a readalong, I would probably DNF. Idk I’m finding the characters really inaccessible and the dialogue cheesy, and the narrative is giving me whiplash jumping around everywhere.

    I devoured this book… am I alone??

I finished The Poppy War last week and still haven’t stopped thinking about it. I will definitely be picking up the rest of the series when I get the chance, but I’m seeing so many saying they couldn’t get into this book or weren’t enjoying it. Is there anyone else out there that couldn’t put it down??

This is textbook women written by a man. Julia is no thoughts, head empty unless talking about sex, and her sexual promiscuousness is the only redeeming thing about her in Winston’s eyes. She conflates violence and sexuality the way men do, the way Winston does, the way the Party, which is run by men, does. She has little traditional femininity (swearing, crudeness, etc) and no sisterhood with other women (Julia literally says she hates women). She is the ultimate “cool girl” objectification and the perfect representation of “love” for an incel.
