sapir-whorf hypothesis mentioned. suzette haden elgin, you would’ve loved arrival (2016)
bit slow to start, but picks up once you get your bearings and you can really feel the love of linguistics in the writing. very second wave feminist in the lack of intersectionality, but it is a product of its time.

absolutely insane read (not in a good way)
my main gripe with this, other than the flat characters and cancer(?!?!) subplot, was how the author described nyc. it was written in a way that you can tell the author meant it as a love letter to the city, but it just felt like she was shoving continuous references down my throat the longer this book went on. literally in the first chapter is “i go downtown, to reformation, one of my favorite clothing stores in soho” girl that’s just product placement i’m trying to read a book, not be advertised to

Whether you love to hate or hate to love 'em, these literary bad girls are anything but well-behaved. *Disclaimer: we do not literally support the illegal and oft cruel behavior of these protagonists (usually); we support the authors bold enough to write them (always).
