I’m really conflicted about this book. This is my first Isabel Cañas book and I really enjoyed her writing and way she can so beautifully set scenes and describe emotions. However, I kept waiting for this book to wow me and it never happened. The entire time I felt like it was almost there, but it just needed more. It almost feels a bit more like an outline of a horror book and the aspects that I was interested, like the demon, its origin in the mine, the locals and the goddess they worshipped, Albas descent into possession, were barely touched on. And the book was SO LONG, there was time to explore these things in detail, but instead the time was spent on scenes that were not nearly as important, and were even a bit repetitive. The romance also felt rushed and inauthentic and because so much of the book was focused on it, it took away from the core of the story which was Albas possession. I find that after the ending, which I did like, I am still left with so many unanswered questions. Overall this was a big disappointment 😕

Okay, so I originally read this book last year around March and despised it but rated it 4 stars due to the impact it had on me. However, my reread this go around, now that there was no shock factor, made me realize just how bad this book actually is. The writing is horrific, and Tem is utterly annoying. I genuinely cannot stand anyone in this book. Is it funny to read? Yes. Is it unhinged? Yes. Is it a well-written, thought-provoking book? Absolutely not. I reread this book in preparation for the second book since I own it, and now, I am no longer wanting to read the second book. However, I will because I’m a masochist when it comes to reading (and I own the book). Don’t get me wrong, this book is deeply hilarious and really goes all in on shock factor, and it’s really fun to read and discuss with other people. But it’s full of sex scenes—like, way too much. Yes, the plot is centered around sex and so is the species; however, I still feel as though it was really overboard on the sex. It just gets tedious and repetitive when you’re reading it. So, all in all, if you want a good book, this isn’t for you. But if you want a fun, funny, unhinged book that will also make you endlessly angry and annoyed, then look no further than Kiss of the Basilisk. 2.5 stars for this reread.
