So I've wanted to read Burry our bones in the midnight soil(currently the biggest book I own) for a long while. I've never read a book that big and even if I want to start reading it I'm so scared of starting it. Idk what to do š

Post from the Black in Blues: How a Color Tells the Story of My People forum
I find the discussion about who is considered Black very interesting. Since race is a social construct, how itās defined can evolve, and every person will perceive it differently. I liked the authorās discussion related to mixed race (light skinned) people causing complicated feelings for many people with darker complexions due to their relative privilege. The story of W.E.B DuBoisās son was absolutely heartbreaking, and really demonstrates how people with darker complexions were denigrated and faced additional prejudice (from white people), resulting in immensely tragic consequences.
For white people, the closer proximity to whiteness of mixed race people (in the book it specifically mentions those with blue eyes) provokes more sympathy, but also causes confusion (as they assume that Black people can only look one way). I feel there is a connection between the unique challenges in finding identity when one is mixed race and them being perceived this way by others (even somewhat by people who are Black). A sort of feeling of being torn between two worlds, and struggling to find oneās place.

I found the book underwhelming but enjoyed hearing a therapists perspective on this book and how she applies it to her practice. I thought I'd share with all of you as well š (Youtube) Hailey Hughes - this book changed my life & my therapy practice | a book report on all about love by bell hooks

I love the length of the audiobook chapters, itās just long enough for me to get hooked but also just short enough that I can listen to one full chapter on my drive to work šāāļø
