I don't even know where to begin.

I've been meaning to read their memoir for FOREVER. I'm impressed with how seamlessly they interwove growing up queer in the 1980s and 1990s while also navigating their budding music careers. I listened to the audiobook and what's so special about it is that, some of the chapters end with actual demos and songs they wrote when they were teenagers. I'm pretty amazed by their sheer raw talent for their age.

Tegan & Sara were the first official concert ticket I ever purchased (outside of friends in bands or underground artists). I'll admit, I mostly played the same 5 songs of theirs on repeat and have been a casual listener but I've seen them live twice in about a 6-8 year time span and both experiences altered my brain chemistry. Tegan & Sara have a way with making their music sound so nostalgic, which is wild since they started writing music at a young age. It almost seems like they each had an "old soul." I think that's why I idolized them when I was younger because I romanticized the 80s and they often sang about their adolescence. They are the epitome of looking at the past through a lens of nostalgia

This memoir has solidified Tegan & Sara as one of my favorite bands.

What a wonderful love letter to the Scream franchise. I can't wait to watch 5-7 soon. I used to HATE slashers but the Scream movies have become a comfort watch (as weird as that sounds). I can tell the author did extensive research and made sure no stone was left unturned. I appreciated how she interspersed various interviews throughout each chapter and made the quotes flow into the topic. Ignoring the fact that this nonfiction and journalism, Cullins is a natural-born storyteller.

I'm so disappointed by this one. The movies that this is a "lover letter" are subversive. Instead, Slasher Summer read rather formulaic and trite. I tried to turn off my brain and allow myself to be entertained but it was just wasn't funny or unique. The first half focused way too much on the character's backstories. I think this would have been better if the first third was cut and the plot started closer to the middle. It just got repetitive with the internal monologues of every single character. I felt like I was reading a diary instead of a story about a slasher. Also, there were too many POVs for such a short novel. The focus should have been diving right into the action and then the readers could infer the details as they kept going.

I had to suspend my disbelief quite a lot. But ultimately, this was entertaining and ridiculous.
