    Phew, I have mixed feelings.

The story itself is intriguing, the protagonist interesting, and the narrative well-crafted. I can't speak to the original, but the language/writing in the translation is beautiful and complements the narrative really well.

We can talk about historical accuracy and about the time this book was written in all we want, but none of that will change the fact that this book uses racist language for Romani people. This edition has a foreword that could have acknowledged and criticized this, but it doesn't, and that, I think, is a tragedy.

And there was so much potential here. The interconnectedness of vampirism and anti-romani sentiments, combined with antisemitism and queerphobia is so interesting, and in a way, I believe, Zárate aimed to explore this intersection in The Route of Ice and Salt, but this attempt falls short. As it stands, the narrative largely reproduces racist sentiments and language.

The audiobook narrator, Gabriel De Leon, did a fantastic job.

    Thoughts from 43% (page 160)

I am struggling so hard to get through this book, I started roughly a month ago and am not even close to the midway point T-T

The pacing of the book is very slow so far, and every character is described in such floral language regardless of importance to plot, to the point where I don't actually remember what anyone looks like or what their names are until they are mentioned by name. I like the idea and the slow emotional journey of the book, but nothing really happens of note between those small story beats, which makes it a slog to get through for me personally. I am used to reading floral prose, but in this case it doesn't really help due to the pace of plot. I am determined to finish the book, as I also have what might be the sequel(?), but I am a little disappointed that I am not liking this anywhere near as much as I had hoped right now.
