I’ve never read Sarah J Maas, but I did buy ACOTAR last year (just haven’t got around to reading it). With the announcement of book 6 coming out in October & book 7 coming out next year - I’m wondering if I finally dive in? Is the series worth the hype? And if so, do I start with ACOTAR or a different Sarah J Maas series…?

It’s a polarizing series for a reason. There are a lot of great things about it AND there are plenty of things that warrant valid criticism. Personally I love it, but I also recognize its weaknesses. It’s not a literary masterpiece, but it’s a very fun time. Do you like stories where characters start off seemingly one way but then you find out you misjudged them? Do you like healing journeys where people step into their power and learn to love and accept their authentic selves? Do you enjoy yelling at characters when they’re being kinda annoying and making stupid decisions? Do you like things that are a little unhinged (reality TV, Twilight, etc.)? Do you like tropes like enemies to lovers, found family, fated mates, etc.? Do you enjoy love stories with fantasy vibes? If yes to all or most of the above, then I expect you’ll enjoy it. Just keep in mind book 1 is necessary context for the rest of the series but it doesn’t REALLY get good until book 2, so if you’re not loving book 1 at least try to get through book 2 (the first three books function as a completed trilogy, and then the rest are more like spin-offs exploring other characters’ stories while continuing the plot). Also the spice level starts off low but increases exponentially as you go through the series if that factors in lol. I recommend just going into it with an open mind and having fun :)
