Mundane Magic: A Lazy Witch's Guide to Hacking Your Brain, Building a Daily Practice, and Getting Stuff Done

Mundane Magic: A Lazy Witch's Guide to Hacking Your Brain, Building a Daily Practice, and Getting Stuff Done

Molly Donlan

Transform the mundane tasks of daily life into intentional moments of magical self-care, with spells, rituals, and exercises that work with your brain, not against it—from the co-host of the Demystify Magic podcast Are the dust bunnies and clutter in your house getting out of control? Do you put off cleaning your shower curtain or organizing your closet until you can’t ignore the mess anymore? Imagine turning these mundane chores into moments of magic, where sweeping the floor or folding laundry becomes an act of spiritual connection and enchantment. But how do we bridge the gap between the ordinary and the extraordinary? That’s where Mundane Magic comes in, to help you focus on the intention behind your actions and tap into everyday magic with simple rituals and mindful moments, like whipping together a coffee spell for abundance or clearing out the stagnant energy under your bed. Initially a skeptic herself, Molly Donlan’s journey took an unexpected turn when chronic hip pain led her to Reiki and the intersection of science and spirituality. She’s been where you are, overwhelmed by the weight of daily stress and household chores, but by injecting boring tasks with a sense of novelty and fun, she found magic practices that worked for her and her ADHD brain, rather than against it. Organized by rooms around the house and divided by the level of difficulty, Mundane Magic shares fun and actionable tips, exercises, spells, and rituals to create micro-moments of magic and motivation. You can organize your chores around the moon cycles to optimize cleansing and creativity, whip up an easy simmer pot for the motivation to tackle that pile of dirty dishes, or turn a minty shampoo into a spell for mental clarity. Mundane Magic offers a fun approach and empathetic support for productivity around the house and reclaiming joy and creativity in the process.

A Step Past Darkness

A Step Past Darkness

Vera Kurian

SIX CLASSMATES. ONE TERRIFYING NIGHT. A MURDER TWENTY YEARS IN THE MAKING… There’s something sinister under the surface of the idyllic, suburban town of Wesley Falls, and it’s not just the abandoned coal mine that lies beneath it. The summer of 1995 kicks off with a party in the mine where six high school students witness a horrifying crime that changes the course of their lives. The six couldn’t be more different. • Maddy, a devout member of the local megachurch • Kelly, the bookworm next door • James, a cynical burnout • Casey, a loveable football player • Padma, the shy straight-A student • Jia, who’s starting to see visions she can’t explain When they realize that they can’t trust anyone but each other, they begin to investigate what happened on their own. As tensions escalate in town to a breaking point, the six make a vow of silence, bury all their evidence, and promise to never contact each other again. Their plan works – almost. Twenty years later, Jia calls them all back to Wesley Falls—Maddy has been murdered, and they are the only ones who can uncover why. But to end things, they have to return to the mine one last time.

So good! This authors writing is very image based and very poetic - I found myself re-reading sections because they were written so beautifully! Reading another book of his called “Razorblade Tears” next!

  • Why’d you pick your current avatar?

Is it the colour? The similarity to your real self? A representation of your favourite genre?

I’ll go first: I got drunk and decided to use the rice bowl avatar, because ”food for thought” was the greatest (and most amusing) thing I could come up with.

  • Bookish drinks?

What are some of your favorite drinks to sip on when you’re reading? 📖

For me, it’s either iced coffee in the morning or a juicy seltzer in the afternoon.

I'm not even that well-versed in astrology, but a shower thought struck me.

Tell me about your favorite books in terms of your sun, rising, and moon signs! Do they match your astrological signs?

    • a thrilling exploration of institutions of power and how they deploy tradition and ritual
    • reckoning with the fact that your world is made up of fragmented truths and lies as told by your oppressors
    • a journey of finding and learning to trust oneself again; a girl's coming of age on hard mode

Rising 🌄: The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo

    • sad evil femme story, told to a nonbinary monk and their companion neixin in a spooky, atmospheric fantasy Asia

Moon 🌙: Sula by Toni Morrison

    • are women's friendships doomed in a world that seeks to either repress women into subservience or scapegoat any who dare to exercise agency?
    • how is one supposed to deal with racial oppression, war trauma, poverty, broken hearts, generational wounds, and misogyny all on top of one another? Can you blame one for choosing compliance or another for defiance?

I think most people would benefit, in some way, from reading this book. Amazing reminders, lessons, realizations, and very very grounded.

A twisty, murderous and quick-paced read - I’ve read it a few times and it has enough nuance to be read more than once, while still being captivating and entertaining!
