A collection of the pilot books for popular series, for those of us who love to follow a character's journey for as long as an author will let us! Some of the below series have heavily debated starting points and book read orders--in those cases the pilot was selected based on what seems to be the most popular approach.

The writing in this one deserves all the accolades. While the pacing is slow, the descriptions grip you from page one and this slow unfolding of the plot carries you nicely from beginning to end. It's being marketed as a slow burn romance in an academic setting, but it is so much more than that. Honestly, I didn't care for the 'romance' (or whatever that was) all that much, the world is much more intriguing. The Will system is a perfect metaphor for how our world works, exposing corruption with no sugar coating. The way it's shown that there can be ambiguity in ethics and two opposing views can be true at the same time is so important, and something that I think kind of lacks in most fantasy works, usually only placing the good guy against the bad guy with no grey areas. That being said, the undercurrent of misogyny is undeniable. It could be just a reflection of the system, and the fact that Vis doesn't explore it too much from his pov, but the truth is that most of the female characters are just portrayed as deceivers. Hopefully this is explored differently in the sequel. All in all, the plot is amazingly intricate and though I did guess the ending somewhere along the line, it still came as a shock that that's the direction this story is being taken in and I can't wait to get started with the next book. There are many loose ends to tie up.
