    🕯️

This was a heartbreakingly excellent book. It really conveyed the vast array of emotions that so many people feel towards the events of May 1980. The different perspectives allowed us to get a sense of how different people were affected (those who died, those who survived but were scarred, those who lost people, those who didn’t have any direct connection but were affected nonetheless).

It was hard to read at times, the description of the torture and brutality was so graphic but it would have been a disservice, I think, for the book to try to hide any of that. The writing was so emotional as well and you really felt every last bit of pain, fear, regret, anger, and grief that the characters were feeling.

The last chapter was one of the most interesting to me because I’m fairly sure it was supposed to be Han Kang herself reflecting on the story! A writer who left Gwangju when she was young and is now trying to reconcile her life in Seoul that seemed to continue on uninterrupted, with the deaths of so many people, some not too much older than herself.

A book that is absolutely worth reading and leaves you with a lot to think about.
