This might be a really bad hot take, but I’m glad I saw the movie before reading it bc I’ve been confused for 727 pages

    WOW OKAY

I am in AWE at how Frank Herbert revolutionized a sub genre of sci-fi and fantasy. I decided to reread this in preparation for the final movie coming out later this year, but also in response to Pope Leo’s encyclical where he addresses the problem with use of artificial intelligence. I am not catholic, so a lot of what I’ve seen on it are just memes of people saying that “the pope has called for Butlerian-Jihad”, and it made me laugh and want to reread.

The fact that Dune is set up in a universe where their entire political system is designed in response to the affects that use of technology “replacing mankind”, while having been written long before technology was as widely accessible as it is today just shows how ahead of his time Herbert was.

The first time I read this, I was much younger, and not as aware of the world around me. Back then, it was a 10/10 based on vibes alone, and today, after reading sci-fi with strong political plots as a form of escapism from the real life politics, it’s still a 10/10.
