i got addicted to this book and couldn’t stop reading it, both loving and hating it. i understand how the main character can be seen as unlikeable (and i too judged her many times, especially not liking her behaviour in the second half of the story) but still both her and their relationship felt so real and heartbreaking. thinking this is how queer women had to live not so many years ago (and still unfortunately often do) really breaks my heart.

“If I were to tell the truth, that their existence, my family’s being in my proximity, remains vague to me as tombstones of strangers in a common cemetery, that only a certain winter exists for me, vivid and clear, surging with life, and that all else is neutral, formless, indifferent, people would think me queer. Only when my mind goes back to that London winter do I feel alive, instead of merely knowing as a fact that I live. In that closed memory do I count my heartbeats by the spirited blood’s surge, there once again I walk with Mara through the evening that is night, holding an electric torch in my hand, the blacked-out glass letting through a faint yellow ring at our feet, and I know what it is to love, to want to die for love.”

“I was angry and yet all the time I loved her more, and now my fingers ache with unused love as they rehearse the unscrewing, the lifting of the latch, my ears rehearse her laughter. […] Sometimes I want to be made free of that winter; and yet, and yet, I'd give everything to see Mara again.”
this book just keeps getting more and more close to my heart

love at first sight is really not my favourite trope but this still felt light and enjoyable to read, let’s see how it goes on!
