Her eyes narrowed, the gold like living ember. He'd never seen anyone so beautiful. This witch had been crafted from the darkness between the stars.
How does one go from having Aelin and Rowan being their favorite characters in Heir of Fire, to having them be their LEAST favorite characters in Queen of Shadows. I mean how did Maas manage to reverse my opinion that quickly with just one book?
This has got to be a really disappointing sequel. I LIVED for Rowan in Heir of Fire. He was such a great addition to the large cast of characters in the series. But that snarky hard core bad ass completely disappeared in this book. Nope. Now, this dude is nothing but a pussy whipped puppy. If you're one of those people that was hard core shipping Rowaelin, then you'll love this book. I, however, do not fall for Sarah J Maas's writing. I'm not going to completely hate a character (Chaol), just so I can love another one (Rowan) because you indirectly told me to. It was blatantly obvious that is exactly what was going on in this book. Does she not know how to create a new love interest without ruining an old one? Gtfoh. She's slowly writing him out of the book because she changed her mind. But she did not do it the right way. She used the same technique a lot of New Adult authors use. Make one of the love interest an asshole so people like the other dude more.
I know Chaol always had those opinions against magic. But the way he felt about Aelin in this book is no different than the way Aelin felt about Manon. I mean, both Chaol and Aelin had a lot of negative opinions and prejudice again those who were not like them. Chaol might have said a few mean things that cut deep. But Aelin literally got physical with Manon. Even after Manon gave Aelin the information she wanted, even after Manon told her she could save Dorian, she still abused her and refused to give her water. Yet this fandom loves to give double standards when it comes to Chaol and Aelin. If you're going to reprimand Chaol for the shit he did in this book, then reprimand Aelin as well, because she's really not that innocent.
This was the best part (not really):
Aelin: If there was any way to save Dorian, I would try to find it.
Also Aelin: skips and prances in different dresses and does a sexy fashion show for Rowan instead of trying to find a way to get Dorian the fuck out of there.
Okay Aelin...sounds fake but okay...
My other favorite part (not really):
Chaol was basically the only person in the book that was so invested in saving Dorian (THANK YOU CHAOL). Aelin, however, was ready to let him die. She didn't even try to find a way to save him. She didn't even TRY. But when Dorian does come back to reality, she had the nerve to say "I came back for you." NO YOU DIDN'T GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE. YOU WAS ABOUT TO LET HIM DIE BUT YOU'RE NOT GOING TO LET HIM KNOW THAT ARE YOU? No Dorian, Chaol and Manon were the real ones that came back for you. But yes, let Aelin take all the credit. Smh....the nerve.
The problem with Maas is that she does a lot of telling and no showing. She constantly tells us that Aelin is brave, and she is fire, and she is amazeballs. Literally the amount of Aelin praise in this book has got to be a joke. No, it was not woman empowerment, it was unnecessary praise. She had to make sure that EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. praised about the powerful Aelin Ashryver Galathynius. No really, every single character fell at her feet and started kissing them. Chaol, the only person who didn't fall to her feet, was literally destroyed as a character. Thanks Maas.
I also don't think Maas understands the idea of warfare. Like why is everyone making allies with Aelin? The reasons Maas gives are totally not realistic. I know this book has wyvers, shapeshifters, Valg princes, etc. But the idea of warfare should be realistic. This is WAR. This is where PEOPLE DIE. So her making allies so easily just makes no sense. There'd have to be way more convincing done on her part than what this book provided. It shouldn't be that easy to create an army. But it seems everyone is willing to join forces with her so easily. BUT WHY?!?!
The only reason this book got a three stars was for Manon and Dorian. They're the only ones that saved the book from getting a lowly one start. I may not have been that invested in Manon's story line in Heir of Fire, but this book completely changed my feelings about her. Literally, both Aelin and Rowan could die and I won't even think twice about shedding a tear. But I swear if Maas even touches Manon or Dorian, I will flip a shit.
R.I.P Chaol. I'm sorry you been done wrong bebe. I will always love your ass.
