I'm waiting for something to make me get into the atmosphere of an overflowing building under siege, but this is really very boring so far. I don't want to dnf two books in a row, but my expectations were VERY different (read: more horror). The Unworthy did the cramped monastery setting so much better and so much more viscerally that this feels YA in comparison. I'm also not a big fan of the pov characters so far. I hope my feelings will change cause the concept is so up my alley đ

Another delightful read by Z.S. Diamanti! This author is hands down one of the best at writing character interactions and dialogue. It never feels forced or awkward. Scenes in the story feel like we are getting a peek into someone's life, not a staged play put on for the readers amusement. This is the best part of his books and I absolutely love it, draws me right into the story.
The world itself is also lush and feels so vibrant and full of life. I will always enjoy taking a dive into the world of Finlestia no matter whose tale we are reading. There isn't ever just exposition dumps to get us the lore, it all happens through natural story telling. The characters themselves are also very well done, they feel relatable and real.
The writing itself is also really approachable and easy to read, it makes the pages fly by. The in world curses are also a highlight for me, they're creative and fit the characters so well. A dwarf saying 'shave me' as a curse is absolutely hilarious and makes so much sense. It also helps to not break the immersion.
The struggles the characters face are also such real struggles people face in the real world. Z.S. Diamanti did a fantastic job representing these challenges, and showing how someone can heal from their past traumas. The lessons and words of wisdom are beautiful, definitely one of the highlights of his writing as well. Even if this is a cozy book it deals with heavier topics with ease without ruining the balance of tone of the story.
As someone who did this read via audiobook I also have to give kudos to the narrator Peter Leppard. He did a wonderful job bringing this book to life.
Overall if you're a cozy fantasy lover I would highly recommend any of the books in the Fables of Finlestia series.
