I haven’t read this book since middle school! Which is longer ago than I care to admit. Anyways, I’m teaching 5th grade for summer school this year and was recommended to read this book with them by the 5th grade teachers. I normally teach 8th grade Science, so this is a bit of a jump for me. I’m hoping it stands up to how awesome I remember this book being!

This was the book picked for our book club and one of my friends who purely reads fantasy and nothing more was sooo upset when this book won and she had to read it BUT she absolutely loved it, she even said that it made her cry! She has now put three of her other books on hold!

I feel a little guilty saying this because I can absolutely see why The Priory of the Orange Tree is so widely loved. Samantha Shannon’s rich and expansive world-building, along with her thoughtful exploration of themes like power, legacy, and identity, make this a truly ambitious and admirable work of epic fantasy. That said, for me personally, it was just okay. I struggled a bit with the multiple POVs (which is already something I don’t gravitate toward so that's entirely my fault), and that made it hard to form a strong emotional connection with any one character. The pacing also felt uneven at times, and despite how much I appreciated the craft, I wasn’t as immersed in the story as I’d hoped to be. Honestly, that's probably on me too. However, I completely understand why this book resonates with so many readers. The standalone epic structure is a rare treat in fantasy, the dragon lore is richly imagined, and the cast of strong, complex female characters is a highlight. There’s also meaningful LGBTQ+ representation, political intrigue, and elegant prose that ties it all together. While it didn’t quite click with me, I can see this being a perfect fit for readers who love high-stakes, character-driven fantasy with deep lore and an inclusive cast.

Very meh. The horse and race plot is what’s saving this for me just because I hadn’t read about that before and it was interesting.

I want to hop on the Elsie bandwagon so bad, buttttt I always have a hard time with cowboy romances. I'm from the south and grew up around cowboys, cows, hell I live right next to a chicken farm. Andddd the nicknames in the books either drive me nuts or I just cant push aside my own experiences enough to enjoy it. Bc in reality, or at least my experience, the cowboy experience is only so positive. Sure, southern hospitality is superrr nice, but I've never met one who wasn't also a raging redneck, racist, or misogynistic due to the southern values taught in my area (stereotype that is sadly true). But!! I'm diving into this, pushing my feelings aside, and giving this a genuine try! Because I've heard SO much praise from this author, I've got FOMO, and I'm actually interested! Let's go babyyyy

I’m dying 😂 As someone who HATES Hallmark movies and books, this book is ✨fantastic✨. I am LIVING for the witty comebacks from Nora and Charlie, they are way too funny. I love how much fun they make of the Hallmark vibes while actively being stuck in it. Greatly enjoying this one.

I'm working on completing a book bingo for my local bookstore and one of the prompts is to read a book a friend didn't like. I don't have friends that read often, so I thought I'd ask here... Recommend me a book you didn't like!
