I'm having so much fun with this book I forgot to post about it. I am so excited for the movie, Ryan Gosling is the perfect casting. You should watch The Nice Guys for further proof of this.

This was a tough read. Truly a first person perspective of a manic pixie dream girl in the midst of mania.

The book has something to say about men; never allowing Ellen the space to change her mind, having sex with someone they can tell is not in their right mind, demanding emotional support even when Ellen is clearly unwilling. I also feel it has something to say about how fragile we are as humans, everyone in this book hits a low point.

I find it interesting that there are so few women mentioned in this book. I truly feel that Ellen may have made it through this easier if she had one solid female friend.

I adore Angela Davis's work. She is so knowledgeable and it is a wonder to read her words.

That being said, this is not essential Angela Davis reading. This assumes that you have a knowledge base that you can learn in her other works such as Is Prison Obsolete? or Race, Women, and Class.

"There are more black people incarcerated and directly under the control of correctional agencies in the second decade of the twenty-first century than were enslaved in 1850."
