I had fairly high expectations for this book, having read very positive reviews, but it didn’t live up to them. I listened to it on audio because I was really excited to hear Vico Ortiz’s narration (which was excellent!). However, I usually only use audiobooks for rereads and realistic fiction, as I have a hard time following fantasy and world building elements in audio. That’s a personal issue, not a fault of the book; that being said, I felt like there was very little focus in the magical elements in this story, which was a little disappointing.

I love that we have books with representation like this; queer, Brown, and disabled characters and intersectionality deserve to be written with as much care as McLemore gives them. However, the focus on Bastián’s ADHD got incredibly repetitive. When I was 2/3 into with the book I felt like it had been about 90% Bastián listing their ADHD symptoms and 10% plot. This made me feel like Bastián’s only character trait was having ADHD.

I would categorize this book as upper middle grade or lower YA.
