So far my interest is not super peaked, but from mixed reviews I am curious to finish the book. I picked this one due to the unreliable narrator, which is a book characteristic that I enjoy.

Am I missing something?
I'm at chapter 6 btw, when Roman first met the Littles and they were talking about the war at dinner.
I thought this book about anti-war slash pacifist??? (This isn't something someone said by the way, I was just sort of was under the impression it was). But, I'm not really understanding the values or morals that are supposed to be described in this book? Like, I don't get it, is being anti-Enva or anti-Dacre a bad thing? The things is, my country has always been known as a pacifist or a neutral country in terms of politics, but we never turn our backs on obvious suffering (like genocide, concentration camps, so on). So, I'm not sure what this book is trying to say? I sort of get that "not reporting what happens at the war front" = "ignorance". But, isn't like getting enthralled by magic into going to war also a bad thing???? It's because I don't sense any religious motivation from the soldiers going to war fighting against Dacre... so I'm under the impression they are enthralled....
Or is this supposed to be a nuanced conversation because not much of the truth is uncovered? I just feel like this book is sort of hard to process because gods and goddesses are treated more like ancient legend that mankind managed to conquer instead of beings they worship. So, I just find it hard to understand why would they be fighting in a war that isn't theirs? (Outside of the obvs reasons like trying to help the West borough and prevent the war getting farther East)

Honestly, why is this book not more popular? Especially with the rise of fantasy and fairy retelling books. This book broke my heart. I knew (I think we all knew) how this book would end, but it still broke my heart!

Great experience reading this! Honestly, I think the main topic of this book is adult loneliness and adult friendships, but wrapped up in a satire dark academia to make it more interesting. But, I like it! I think just plain out reading about a graduate student's pain and inability to fit in would be harder to digest. The element of fiction and "wtf" actually make it easier to read.

Iâve read VE Schwab before even though I wasnât much of a fantasy reader. Vaguely remembered the book & writing itself was good but was pretty tiring to read. For those whoâve read it, would you recommend this to someone who isnât much of a fantasy reader?
Genuinely interested in reading and has read her previous work before, so pls be nice!

Is it perfect? No, but rarely any book is. Offers great reading experience, got me out of my reading slump.
Fast pace & fast reading experience. Good writing. Interesting characters. Overall, interesting work of fiction.
If you want something for the sake of enjoying it, do read this. But, please donât go in expecting something phenomenal because itâs really popular. I kinda feel bad about the negative reviews. I donât think there would be so much of it, if it wasnât âoverhypedâ.
