Cinder is back and trying to break out of prison―even though she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive if she does―in this second installment from Marissa Meyer. Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother, or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana. The adventure continues in this fresh fairytale retelling that combines elements of Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.

    I loved this so much!!
Scarlet reminds me of a farming, shotgun-wielding Yelena Belova lol

I enjoyed this second book more than the first one, especially that we have multiple POV chapters following our main characters.
-Kai is examining his feelings and trying very hard; imho he's really portrayed as a genuine and caring leader, even if he's making poor choices
-Cinder is starting to figure out and grow into her powers, I appreciated her feeling morally conflicted about them
-Captain Thorne is great comedic relief, I love how he's flirty and funny but resilient and so far has a good rapport with Cinder
-Scarlet was melodramatic and fiery, and so determined to get her grandmother and find/rescue the woman she loved and who raised her; Scarlet did a few times cross the line into the selfish and childish territory for me...

The 'love' story between Scarlet and Wolf was pretty pitiful though. It felt incomplete, and very much to me like some romance action movies, where the action, drama, and tension experienced together suddenly results in declarations of love?? At the end of this book those declarations felt like they came out of the blue--I'd have much rather they discussed feelings of interest and tentative pursuit of a relationship, instead of the weird soulmate stuff? They hadn't had time to bone or get to know each other, so the 'alpha female' bit just make me roll my eyes. The only way I'd be more okay with it is if it's really 'a wolf thing', but even then...

To me, I have a preconceived notion on who the reading audience is for this book series, as well as the publication date, and I'm finding the writing to align with that mindset. I do think it's rather predictable and the characters badly need some common sense and critical thinking skills.
This book was more intense and faster paced than Cinder, which kept the pages turning. I liked the introduction of more characters that will support Cinder and aid her going forward. I was entertained and liked it better than book 1, and people seem to love book 3 so I'm looking forward to that.
