𝘓𝘢 𝘉𝘰𝘭𝘢 𝘕𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘢: we've always been queer

𝘓𝘢 𝘉𝘰𝘭𝘢 𝘕𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘢 is a historical movie set during the Spanish Civil War, focused on the story of three gay men who suffered, directly or indirectly, the oppression of the War and whose stories revolve around the same person: the gay poet Federico García Lorca. With this list, I want to showcase Lorca's work and his relationships as a gay man in the 1930s, but also books that talk about queer stories that the dictatorship tried to hide. We've always been queer ✊🏳️‍🌈

This country has too many love stories hidden in the fields, we have to scratch the earth to let them out, to exist I am OBSESSED with 𝘓𝘢 𝘉𝘰𝘭𝘢 𝘕𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘢, so of course I had to create a list based on it!! If you live in Spain, go watch it!!! If you don't, watch it once it's on Netflix or your cinema! I can count with one hand the number of movies that have deeply touched me, and this one passes. I cried from the very start, and once the movie finished, I felt...hollow, yet hopeful. For now I've added books I've found on Bookgram, but if you want to recommend other non-fiction books about queer stories in oppressed countries, be my guest!

I had to add Alana S. Portero, not just because she appears on the movie in a little cameo, but also because her work reflects the reality of being trans in the 70s (I cried with that book) and a woman during the Civil War (haven't read that one yet but I have it ready on my bookshelf 😍). I know Cosamala is not inherently queer(that I know of), but what can I say, I can make my own exceptions 😌
