No problem; just to clarify, Manan Ahmed Asif is a Pakistani Muslim author, not Indian Muslim. I merely added the book to my tbr because I was interested in the material.
I haven't had the opportunity to read a book about indian politics by a muslim author as I only added the books I'd read or heard about off the top of my head. There was no research involved in curating this. But if you're looking for how muslim identity is shaped in india, I'd highly recommend Banu Mushtaq.
In India dissents, you'll find letters and excerpts of arguments from a lot of Muslim writers, including but not limited to Kabir, Sufi poets, classical Urdu poets like Sauda Mohammad Rafi, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Ismat Chugtai, Mirza Changezir, and Rezwan Hussain. Please feel free to research about them.
And if you want to recommend books that fit this list by a muslim author, please feel free to recommend them and I'll add it to the list.
I’m Indian Muslim. I found your list while looking for non-fiction books on India. I wouldn’t have commented on the lack of books by Indian Muslim authors if the description didn’t state it was in solidarity with the protests. It was a bit jarring to have to see news of Indian Muslims being brazenly targeted for protests led primarily by middle class Hindus and then see this list lacking a standalone Indian Muslim name. I already have Banu Mushtaq’s Heart lamp in my tbr. I recommend Muslims Against Partition by Shamsul Islam — a critical read to not just contextualise the modern Hindutva movement but also to discover that the idea of the partition of the subcontinent preceded the Muslim League/Jinnah, with its seeds laid by the very same people who now blame Indian Muslims for it (the forefathers of Hindutva). There is also Gujarat Files by Rana Ayyub and But You Don’t Look Like A Muslim by Rakshanda Jalil. Thanks for letting me know about India Dissents, I’ll check it out.
