so called KKKanada day

many LOVE to claim that canada is a tolerant country, way less hateful than our southern neighbours of the united states. that couldn't be further from the truth. since the beginning of colonization of turtle island, white settlers have done everything in their power to destroy not only indigenous culture, but black and brown cultures as well. indigenous people are calling us not only to refuse to celebrate the holiday, but to decolonize our minds and do the work

I haven’t had a chance to read it yet because reading more then one book at a time does NOT work for me, but would “Seven Fallen Feathers” by Tanya Talaga fit here? I got gifted it and from the synopsis on the back I think it would :)

Apologies for the oncoming rant, I just have a lot of thoughts on this topic 😅

On another note, this is genuinely such an important list! In my experience, I’ve found people often mistake national pride with worship, but they serve very different purposes. It’s when pride gets perverted that it becomes an issue. Pride ultimately motivates one to do whatever they can to improve your country, to lead it to a better, more equitable future. Pride encourages you to listen to and advocate for human and non human voices, to want accessibility and safety for everyone, truthful and non whitewashed education, and cultural and religious freedom for all (I once heard it described as a “cultural salad” rather then a melting pot. I love this so much more because the connotations to a salad is 100x better than one of a melting pot). Pride makes you actual go out there and do your part, whatever that may be.

Worship, on the other hand, discourages you from learning the country’s current and past reality. It encourages you to block out anything even slightly negative or upsetting, it keeps you neatly tucked away and hidden until the newest event that requires unquestioning canon fodder. Worship is the cloth covered cage that you do not realize you are trapped in. It encourages you to mistake captivity as freedom. Healthy pride is what lifts that cloth and hands you the key. What you do with that key, however, is entirely up to you. The choice is yours, and you have many, unlike with worship which never even gives you the chance.

seven fallen feathers would absolutely fall on here! thank you for the recommendation! your writing here is impeccable. nationalism is def something we need to decolonize

Thank you! I was a little hesitant to use the word nationalism because it’s such a loaded one but it’s definitely the one I had in mind :)

Oh thank goodness for this list. I have some family members who are full of that weird nationalism. It’s appalling. Bad enough to be weirdly in love with any nation state, but one currently enacting a genocide and funding another. 😮‍💨 Absolutely not.

100% absolutely!

Louder for all the Canadians in the back who’s so privileged they don’t see issues within their own settler colonial state! 🫠 Thank you a million times over for this list! 👏🏻

1

GREAT list!! Thank you! Canada Day is nothing more than propaganda for a state that has participated in multiple genocides to exact its control.

3

SPEAK ON IT. and are STILL participating!
