Swedish Classics

A collection of Swedish classics that have been translated to English, including some more modern classics. First I added classics I'm familiar with myself and then I went down a rabbit hole looking at a couple of lists online and the recently established cultural canon of Sweden. I've made an effort to add diversity where I can but as you can imagine it's quite lacking, especially in works that have been translated to English. I've also excluded poetry for now as that's not my thing.

I originally had Tove Jansson on this list since she's Finland-Swedish and wrote in Swedish but decided to remove her as she's ultimately more tied to the Finnish culture. If anyone is interested I found a fantastic list of Iconic Finnish literature that I recommend checking out 🫶🏻

i might then look into making a list for Danish classics 👀

Do it! I had fun going down a rabbit hole and seeing how much I recognised even though I don't read much in Swedish. Plus now I have a bunch on the tbr 🙂‍↕️

What a great list. Thank you for doing this! P. S Tove Jansson is Finnish 😊

She was Finland-Swedish and wrote her books in Swedish so I included a couple for those reasons ☺️ edit: thank you so much for the love, I had fun making it! 🫶🏻

Okay 😊 I thought that perhaps you didn't know. All that does still make her a Finn still. We have so little claim to fame, especially in the literary world, that I'm not easily giving up Tove Jansson. Great to get people to read her books though.

I completely understand where you're coming from, she is absolutely Finnish and belongs to the Finnish literary world. I'm half Finnish and like most people have a lot of pride in that heritage so I understand it's a tricky subject due to Sweden's colonisation of Finland. My thoughts in placing her on the list was that she's part of a prominent population of Finland-Swedish people which is an important part of our (both Finland's and Sweden's) history. Hopefully this makes sense and makes my reasoning clearer ☺️

I have removed her since I really don't want people who don't know to misunderstand and think she's Swedish. I also looked to see if there was a list of Finnish classics and I found one that I've linked in the pinned comment. Thank you for your perspective 🫶🏻

Love thiiis :))

I'd say Stieg Larsson deserves a spot on here too 🫣

Understandable but I feel they're a bit too contemporary for a classics list, I think the newest title on the list is from the 80's
