Where the Willows Weep: Horror in the Deep South

It’s hot and humid, the cicadas are buzzing, and there’s violence in the air.

Horror books and short stories set in the Deep South.

Think: swamps, bayous, bullfrogs, Spanish moss, hauntings, haints, voodoo/hoodoo, monsters hidden in plain sight, structural violence, and the oppressive weight of history.

Comps: True Detective S1; Sinners; South of Midnight

Recs welcome! 🖤

❗️Some of the these books are classified as extreme horror/splatterpunk. PLEASE protect yourself, and check all trigger warnings.❗️

What a cool list! Is this adult only or do you accept YA recs?

Thank you. 🫶🏻 Most of what I’ve added is adult, however YA recs are welcome! As long as it’s within the horror genre and pretty firmly has a setting in the South/Deep South. :)

This sounds SO cool! But in complete honesty, I'd NEVER be brave enough to read like true horror as I'm a big scaredy cat, haha. Maybe one day tho!

Honestly, that’s so real. Whenever I do, the light stays on, the doors stay locked, and my feet stay firmly under the covers haha.

Probably exactly what I'd do as well haha 😭😭
