water is wet (and other facts about the ocean)

“Every time I slip into the ocean, it’s like going home.” —Sylvia Earle

Nonfiction about the ocean, specifically concerning it as a complex ecosystem, its contributions to regulating our entire planet, and the ways it entwines with human history—especially as the place where life first arose.

As always, I'm accepting suggestions and critiques of what's included! Feel free to share thoughts and recommendations.

Scope of this list will be nonfiction books about

  • the ocean,
  • how it works as its own ecosystem,
  • the ways it impacts every other ecosystem on our planet,
  • the impact humans are having on it,
  • how life originally evolved and arose from it,
  • and just how fucking cool it is.

Please note, this list will not intentionally include anything to do with complex, post-cretaceous organisms. Special exception may be made for foundational lifeforms such as plankton and cyanobacteria.

Thanks in advance!

I fear I’m stealing this list. I’ve lived my entire life by the ocean and I love it so much!!

Haha, steal away!! I’m fascinated by it specifically from a systems perspective. Like the complex interplay of pH and temperature and chemical composition and all the cycles is plays a role in and how marine life impacts, benefits from, and is shaped by it??? So fucking cool ✨

Yesss I love this list!

As far as recs, I haven't read it yet but it looks like 🔗 Ocean: Earth's Last Wilderness by David Attenborough and Colin Butfield might be what you're looking for.
