Kind of drooling over "perceived hostility of the landscape itself" because it's so different from most other gothics I've experienced, and with my love of nature and landscapes in general, it sounds like a fascinating blend with my love of horror.

yeah the australian gothic is so unique (and so underappreciated on a global scale)!
as you might imagine, early australian gothics were mainly written from a colonial lens, and explored the alienation and violence of the settler experience, as well as the demonisation of Indigenous people and the history and stories of the land.
contemporary australian gothics still grapple with the brutality of colonial genocide—though now from differing perspectives, not just that of the guilt-ridden european settler—as well as the degradation and mistreatment of our environment, grief, racism, and gendered violence.
in this list, you’ll find a cross-section of classic and contemporary australian gothic fiction, intended as an introduction to the genre.

yeah i think the australian gothic as a cinematic genre is probably more widely recognised! the picnic at hanging rock film adaptation brought a lot of love to it
I've had more experience with it in cinema myself, and have watched 🔗 Picnic at Hanging Rock and loved it. I can imagine lots of people who've seen that wanting to seek out the book and also read more into the niche!
