This was such a stark contrast to the last memoir I read, with incredible honesty and reflection woven throughout the book. At times things jumped around a little and I got a smidge lost, but this was a really heartfelt and emotional work, which features both pain and joy and the way in which both can be present throughout a life lived. The audiobook in particular was so excellently narrated by Christina herself, though hearing where they had to cut it together because of her MS slowing her down was pretty heart breaking.
I appreciate that this was not another “woe is me, fame is hard” nor was it a list of name drops, but instead a narrative full of very human moments and recollections.

This book delivers on all of its promises: an emotional story across multiple generations, showcasing the experiences and the traumas of Japanese Americans throughout American history, and the ways in which those experiences ripple out.
The language and prose is general simple but impactful, and did a great job of showing many sides of this complicated history, providing tons of varied perspective. I enjoyed this one a lot, and learned quite a bit on top of that. It was also a pretty quick read, with quick pacing despite offering a lot to think on.
Big thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Another solid, action packed adventure! A few characters are feeling a little plot armored at this point but I’m honestly not even mad about it.
I really like that the world is expanding, and things are starting to connect, and as always, even while there are intricately woven threads the story was fun and easy to follow for a very quick read.
And the puppy!
