4/5🌟
This book was so much better than Hazelthorn on my opinion!!
The imagery was just as provocative in terms of the forest and the moment by moment feelings of the characters. Their dread and horror, the self-disgust and agony were all so visceral it was easy to fall into alongside them.
The body horror and gore was also handled so well. It never felt over the top or like torture porn, it was pure horror and terror with no sense aside from wanting their deaths unless they complied. And the scenes with Andrew’s slow realization of what the forest was doing to him??? Oh I was EATING that ENTIRE time as I read his reactions to the changes to his body, very very well done
While it was set in modern times, any mentions of it felt far less intrusive compared to Hazelthorn where it felt a bit immersion breaking.
Near the end I was also questioning Andrew’s reality, and what really was happening around him and what wasn’t. And the twist at the end was enjoyable and genuinely not one I saw coming until I got closer.
Honestly very solid, and has drawn me back to Drew as an author
