I genuinely can’t understand his writing which is unfortunate bc I love the premise. I read ‘I Was a Teenage Slasher,’ and I had a difficult time following his prose, but I thought it was a one-off. EDIT- I also want to say, this is mostly just on me, for some reason I have a hard time with his writing style. The audiobooks help tho!
Quote: “Etsy?” she asked when I did show up. She was looking from my ID to me, to see which was the typo. It’s ‘Betsy’ really, I didn’t say, but a boy with a speech impediment in kindergarten… who cares? “The last name,” I told her, as politely as I could.
This is on Pg 4 before I knew who the narrator was, so it took my brain minutes to decipher this. I guess her nickname is Etsy bc a kid mispronounced it, but why not say that instead of saying it’s a last name?
I’m taking this too seriously lol I think this is an issue with my brain. A lot of ppl love his books, so he’s a great writer, I just can’t follow it for some reason

I'm trying to figure out what angle this author is taking with the narration style because the writing feels so different from what I'm used to. The first sentence starts off with "A day worker reaches into the wall" and yet after the first paragraph it becomes established that this is a recollection and not something happening in the moment. It's an interesting choice, especially since only a few pages later the narration begins to focus on addressing Etsy's great x3 -grandfather, and so I guess technically switches to something akin to second person pov? Makes me wonder how often switches in POV and tense will happen throughout.

Hope this will be helpful for others, I found a reader's guide which "describes unfamiliar terms used by Good Stab, a fictional nineteenth-century Blackfeet man."
(I know I needed this)

This is aimed at 9-12 year olds but is the utterly delightful story of a young girl who does not want to be sent to a nunnery to learn sorcery, and instead wants to learn to be a knight. Her twin brother does not want to be a knight so she encourages him to swap places and we follow her on her trials at knight school (it's not called knight school, but this is what it is). This is such a fun book and Alanna is a wonderful heroine.
