There's a cynicism and gender rejection to Frenchman's Creek that keeps an interesting tension running through an otherwise genre-typical story. Du Maurier seems to really ask (with self-mocking bitterness) if the greatest tragedy and crime possible is to be born a woman. RIP Dona St. Columb, you would have loved Elizabeth Swan (and unfortunately related a little too well to the war crime that was the ending of her story)
