I was really invested in the beginning and the pacing felt good. Alice became almost unbearable in the middle and I almost dnf the book. This feels a little like if Babel and Yellowface had a child, but it mostly got the bad parts of both parents. I really enjoyed Babel a lot but it was a little dry in some parts. The dry parts and the academic setting is what Katabasis got from it. Yellowface had hateable characters but really good pacing and that was inherited to Katabasis. At least the pacing in the beginning but mostly the loathing characters with Grimes and Alice. With all that being said, I’d still say anyone that likes Kuang as a writer should give this book a chance. A friend of mine really loved the book and finished it a month earlier. I get why she liked it as so many others too did, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea. For the most part at least.
