"I was trapped here, for humanity's own selfish purposes, and now they ruined the same world they wanted me to bless."

Gosh that was beautiful. Barely started the book and there's already such an interesting reflection on humans and humanity. I'm moved by the beautiful writing of this author.

It's been so long since I read a 5-star book, and I certainly wasn't expecting it to be this one. I don't typically read these types of books, but I thoroughly enjoyed this from beginning to end, and read it much faster than I've been able to read anything else lately.

Humor and cozy vibes are woven in during every tense moment that would otherwise (and might still) have you stressing the hell out, and I was very attached to the characters - even and especially the inanimate ones.

But the way T. Kingfisher handles the elements and context of the plot is what really sold me. A YA/middle-grade book that not only tackles systemic inequality with an anti-establishment perspective, but takes great pains to remind the reader that a child should not be put in these situations? I've quite literally never read anything like it before. I wish I had a book like this when I was a kid - something that didn't just tell me to believe I could get through hard things, but comforted me with the knowledge that I shouldn't have to in the first place.

Even if this book doesn't seem like one you'd typically read, do yourself a favor and at least give it a try.

I'm off to make a sourdough starter named Bob.
