  • To DNF or not to DNF

What’s everyone’s philosophies about DNFing? I have to admit it’s something I’ve found really difficult. Even if I’m not interested at all in the book and find it a slog or I’m just not connecting to the material, I feel this immense guilt about not ever picking it up again. I’d rather not read at all than not finish. The one time I’ve DNFed a book with almost no intention of ever picking it up again was Passage by Connie Willis, and it still took me half the book to tell myself I’d made enough of an effort to justify stopping.

I think it's more of a disgrace that the Ministry is not paying their employees enough

    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

There are not enough reviews from Chinese people and boy, is that clear. Just look through them and you'll see the difference in ratings when someone is Chinese vs not.

    --------
The story follows one woman in quaint 1400s China from like 9 years old to 90+. She's a laaady doctooorrrrr. As a whole, this book is dreadfully long-winded and repetitive. I don't need to hear a hundred times about what makes a good and proper wife, what the foot binding process is, how important it is to have a son, etc. It gets old. We get it, the characters already know, everyone gets it. There is no need to remind the reader again how important sons are.

In terms of details. Jfc. I despise the way See just directly translates the different characters that make up a word. The uterus, "Zi-gong" or 子宫, is just uterus. No one calls it a "child palace," what the fuck is that. The main character refers to her mother as "Respectable Lady" and idk what tf that's supposed to be in Chinese. It would be like if you called Coca-Cola "quench thirst, happy" (可口可乐)mmmm NO. As one of the other reviewers mentioned, German, would've never been translated like that. Imagine a whole book where German medical terms like uterus Gebärmutter was constantly called the "give birth mother". Who thought this was a good idea??? It's so cringey. Why are you directly translating characters sometimes and then not doing it other times? Who was the Chinese person who OK'd this because I doubt it was Lisa See who is happy to let people believe she's Asian because her great great grandfather or something was from mainland China.

I would love to hear the perspective of an actual TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) practitioner on this book. Because while in SURE this book was meticulously researched, I don't know if it was laid out or displayed well or if like with "child-palace," Lisa See just directly translated everything and made it weird.

  • Personal library thoughts.

Like. Okay. I have a small habit of buying too many books. So to cut back on that, I have started to change from just buying the books I want to read, and focus my energy into saving up to buy special editions and hardcovers of the series that I know I absolutely adore as like an actual collection.

I'm thinking of making more use with libraries, the internet archive, etc for reading itself.

I will admit there is no actual question, I just want other people's thoughts about this and maybe some recs on other places to get the books I'm interested in.

  • Summary of the book in reviews

I have always wondered why do some people start their reviews with a whole paragraph summarizing the book? When I'm going through reviews, I have already read the official summary so I don't need to read ten other versions of it. Is it only because people copy-paste what they wrote on their blog where there is no initial context for the book? Wouldn't it make sense to remove this part where you're posting on any book review sites? I just struggle to understand (note that I ask this question purely by curiosity, no judgment for people who do that! 🫣)

  • If you could only save one book in your collection

Your house is on fire! You only have time/space to save one physical book from your collection - What book are you saving? (optional bonus question - why that book?)

  • How often do you look up words? 🔍📔

I'm currently reading a book with lots of Spanish words, and I don't know any significant Spanish. In the forums there's lots of posts saying people are looking up a ton of the words to understand the text. In other book forums I've also seen posts along the same lines unrelated to language, just general "I have looked up so many words; have your dictionary nearby" etc

I basically never look up words. At this point in my reading journey it's quite rare for me to encounter any (English) word I don't know, and even if I don't know it (any language) I can 99% of the time understand the meaning from context clues and therefore feel no need...

Am I just a weirdo for never referencing the dictionary?? How often do you grab the dictionary/Google, and what's a great word you've learned from this process?

Here's a previous club post talking about a similar topic

  • EU Online bookshop

Hi guys does anyone here know an online bookshop that:

    1. isn't affiliated with Amazon
    2. has reasonable shipping within the EU
    3. that the English books are reasonably priced and/or are second hand I used Vinted to buy second hand but the selection is sparse and I've seen libristo but I don't trust it. Has anyone tried it?

  • Filler and fluff

Every once in a while I’ll go through some reviews of books I’ve read just to see what other people think. And something I’ve noticed is that there’s a good amount of people who don’t like slice of life moments or detours when they’re reading.

This got me thinking about the shift away from 20+ episode seasons on tv and the cutting of filler episodes.

I, for one, love slice of life moments in books and filler episodes are often some of my favorite episodes in tv. To me, some of the best character moments come from them. Not development, but moments. Something small that tells you these characters have lives beyond what we’re given as an audience. (Please. Some shows need more than 8 episodes, executives.)

So, is there a correlation? If you like little sidetracks in your books, do you also like filler episodes? Do you not like either? One but not the other? (I’m particularly interested in the why on this one)

how are non-spanish speakers enjoying this book? is it more challenging? I speak/read portuguese, so I understand Spanish pretty well, even the slang hehe. so I am having the time of my life, listening to the audiobook!!! which made me think of people who don't understand Spanish, is the experience less fun?

  • Whoops! Just found out you don't get points for any reviews you leave after you've already submitted a rating

Today I finished reading a book and since I was a bit busy I decided to leave a rating on my phone before I forgot and then write my review when I could get on my computer. After posting is when I found out that you get 1 point for ratings and 5 for reviews, but you only get the 5 points for leaving the review if you leave it at the same time that you're rating it but not after. I don't leave a lot of reviews and usually if I do I leave it at the same time as my rating so I wasn't aware of this until now, so I guess this counts as a little PSA for anybody else who didn't know :P

  • Series Numbering

Okay, so I love when a book series has the numbers on the spine. Especially for longer series. However, I recently found a matching set of the Maze Runner books at a Thrift Store and it is so annoying to me that they are numbered in publication order verses chronological order. I can’t move them how I want because the numbers being wrong hurts my head but so does this.

    Kp7CsHv.md.jpg

It also made me think that even if I read books in a different order, I prefer to place prequels before the rest when I put the series on my shelf. Like I read in publication order but still like to put prequels first on the shelf.

Anyways, nothing super dire. I’m just curious but what are your thoughts? Do you like books numbered in publication order or chronological? If they aren’t numbered, how do you arrange them?

I’m curious to see what others do!

Edit: just to clarify, I like to read in publication order. I just like to put my books on the shelf in chronological order.
