Post from the The Poppy War (The Poppy War, #1) forum
I started wondering if maybe the book wasn’t as dark as people said it was, or if maybe I had a higher tolerance than most people reading this book. BUT NO NEVER MIND I GOT THERE HOLY SH*T. Very unfortunate for me that I got ‘there’ while I was sat in a hairdresser’s chair with bleach in my hair, trying not to gasp/cry.

Before you start this book, I think it is important to remember that this trilogy is strongly inspired by the second particularly violent and deadly Sino-Japanese war (almost 30 million deaths). Rebecca Kuang obtained a master’s degree in Chinese studies and a master’s degree in contemporary Chinese studies. She is therefore very informed on the subject to be able to draw inspiration from it and integrate it into her works. Check out this tiktok someone made for more details https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNd9jVpFM/ It is also important to know that, due to the author’s inspirations, certain passages in this book are not easy to read. There are many extremely violent war scenes depicting genocide as well as war rapes. That being said, I still recommend this reading to you because it is far too interesting and qualitative for you to miss.
