What a weird name for a fictional French city, Minou-sur-Marne is like calling a town Pussy-on-Missouri 💀 I guess it wasn't intended but I laughed!

I liked the (idea of the) characters, vibe and plot but I'm not sure a novella was the best format? Everything moves very fast, I think the relationship between the mermaid and the plague doctor could have been gut wrenching were it more developed. I couldn't get attached in such a short amount of pages, especially since 80% of said pages are filled with convoluted sentences just for the hell of it 💀

I really wanted to enjoy this book but I find it hard to care... I like the way it's written and I'm intrigued by the plot, but it's just so damn long and not that engaging. To the Boundlings that liked it, will it get better? I need motivation to continue!

In theory, this had everything I enjoy the most in a book: (religious) horror elements, an epic journey, a medieval setting, demons and other monsters, a various cast. But only in theory. I finished it because I remained hopeful until the end but it felt like an assignment, dare I say a waste of time. I usually enjoy a long novel with a slow pace as it allows great character development, but it wasn't the case here. We ended up knowing very little about our adventuring party, and unfortunately the only characters that peaked my interest disappeared from the narrative without us even knowing what happened to them. None of them felt human enough to care for. Even the plot was a succession of mishaps and provided no thrill despite the gravity of the situations. Everything ended up being anticlimactic. The only redeeming qualities were the writing (albeit a bit heavy at times) and the amount of research the author probably did to write this book.
