I would have rated this lower if it wasn't for the second half of the book being so much better and different than the first. When things actually started happening and emotional beats began to be paced much better, I enjoyed the story a lot more and couldn't stop reading. I read the first half of the book across nearly 3-4 weeks, and the second half in 48 hours.

What I will say, is that stylistically, I am irked by some of the choices made in writing (thoughts in single quotation marks, spaces between em dashes, and lack of punctuation in thoughts when things begin to go south).

Regardless, I think I actually will be continuing the series based on just how different the second half of the book was, so thank you to the person who told me to keep going!

I am struggling so hard to get through this book, I started roughly a month ago and am not even close to the midway point T-T

The pacing of the book is very slow so far, and every character is described in such floral language regardless of importance to plot, to the point where I don't actually remember what anyone looks like or what their names are until they are mentioned by name. I like the idea and the slow emotional journey of the book, but nothing really happens of note between those small story beats, which makes it a slog to get through for me personally. I am used to reading floral prose, but in this case it doesn't really help due to the pace of plot. I am determined to finish the book, as I also have what might be the sequel(?), but I am a little disappointed that I am not liking this anywhere near as much as I had hoped right now.

  • Fantasy and Sci-Fi Murder Mystery Recommendations

Basically what the title says—I have found that I really enjoy fantasy and sci-fi murder mysteries, but I am finding it difficult to find books to read in the genre. Was wondering if anyone has any good recommendations?

For an example of the types of books I have read, I really enjoyed Mur Laffery's "Six Wakes", all of Robert Jackson Bennett's fantasy mysteries, Mary Robinette Kowal's "The Spare Man", and China Mieville's "The City & The City".

  • Stand alone fantasyy ⚔️📜

hii, so I don't really know how to explain this but I haven't read a good fantasy book in a while and I think it might just be my fault because due to college I don't have the time and sometimes money to invest into a fantasy book that looks like is JUST THE THING that will capture my heart because it's part of a series Now I have tried before to get into sub genres where it's more common for books to be standalones such as cozy fantasy and I will say I have found some gems like an enchantment of ravens However I really, really miss picking up a book that is pure fantasy, not just a romance with a magical realism setting, a cozy mystery set in a fantasy world and so on so for. I want something that will give me the same feeling I got when I first got introduced to fantasy with "the folk of the air" series when I was in highschool, especially now that my tastes have changed a bit and I have tried a lot pivoting a bit away from ya fantasy.

Are there any standalone fantasies that you have read and felt complete on their own, that have their own epic fantasy world with intrigue, mystery, romance, horror subplots, anything really I would love to experiment and experience itt💕💕

(For the record some fantasy books that I have loved are the folk of the air, Emily wilde's encyclopedia of fairies, the jasad heir, the adventures of Amina al sirafi, a song of ice and fire and the tainted cup P.S. it would be highly appreciated if the author is not someone with a known problematic past and present such as JK Rowling, Sarah J Maas...)

  • Least Favourite Books

Does anyone have a book (or books??) that they just hate with every fibre of their being? If so, why? Like is it just not your cup of tea or is it so irredeemably bad you side eye anyone who likes it?

I recently read "Pamela; or Virtue Rewarded" by Samuel Richardson for a university class & it genuinely might be one of the worst things ever written (that was also, bafflingly, insanely popular....) and I'm curious what other books are out there that might also claim that title!

  • What is a book you feel needs more hype than it gets?

Looking to add more books to my TBR. No YA please - other than that, feel free to hype up your most underhyped books!
