I keep hearing good things about this book, but i’m wondering how you all felt about the narration style. I read The Martian a while back and it felt like getting the story from a real bro over a couple of brewskies at the pub (which, nothing is wrong with that, it’s just not my preferred style). Curious to hear your thoughts! Ty

Am I reading the wrong book?🙃 So many people have rated this book 5 stars and I really don't understand why so far. It's okay, but it's kind of boring and the mc, and really all the other characters, are painfully uninteresting. The premise is cool, but that's about it. Some parts are cute and fine to read, but my gosh...what am I missing🫠

The writing is very difficult to get through. Partly because it just sounds like the author is regurgitating the freshman year astrophysics class he just took, but also because of jarring mistakes, like this tense jump:
"Venus's atmosphere is ninety times Earth's pressure and almost entirely carbon dioxide. Its spectroscopy signature of CO2 would be overwhelmingly strong. Mercury had no carbon dioxide at all, so the nearest competitor would be Earth. But we had a minuscule CO2 signature compared to Venus."

Truly, earnestly awful. I’ve never been less surprised to find out that a book was written by a software engineer.
I am continually horrified by the steadily increasing number of novels which claim to cater to adults but have clearly been written at a 6th grade level. The prose in PHM is hard to bear in general, but at its worst when attempting emotion or humor (for an example of the latter, consider the joke about sleep pulled verbatim from tumblr on page 205). There are times when the narrative gets emotional, but only in the way Bing-Bong being left behind in Inside Out was emotional (and even then it is no match for Pixar in presentation). Teaching kids does not mean you have to write like one. This is an AP Chemistry (or whatever, insert the most relevant science class here) word problem stretched out to 500 pages. The only upside is the letters are large and the type is wide, presumably because PHM is more interested in looking like a novel than actually being one. Boo. End review.

Personally, I am of the opinion that no character in this book sounds even remotely human, so if that is your only concern than you are entirely safe. The whole vibe is STEM major’s first creative project, and the narration is not so much a human being speaking of events that happened to them as a Chat GPT summary of the aggregated comedic output of 2014 Tumblr.
