A disgraced knight-turned-brigand seeks salvation through escorting an uncanny girl from her dead father's land in Normandy to the Papal palace in Avignon. They cross through a landscape ravaged by plague and desperation, not to mention demons, monsters, and men who might as well be monsters.

Buehlman writes evocatively, and conjures eerie, frightening scenes time and time again. His characters - even the ones we only get to see for a page or two - feel thoughtful, and the characters we spend a lot of time with will continue to stay with me after having finished the book.

There were a few scenes that I would have preferred to have been reframed, and some phrasing that I didn't love, and one character who died that I really, really wish Buehlman and the narrative had spared, but overall I really enjoyed listening to this book, and I certainly won't be forgetting it anytime soon!

  • Exploring Quakerism

Does anyone have any recommendations for non-fiction books that explain the history and beliefs of Quakers? I checked the lists and quests and came out empty. I checked for posts related and found a couple but not that worked as recs.

It’s a belief system that has been mentioned in some books I’ve truly loved, one in particular being What Comes After by Joanne Tompkins. And I’d like to have more knowledge from a non-fiction perspective so I can bring context when it’s mentioned in fiction.
