I love a botanical horror book, but this one was pretty uninteresting & frankly pretty boring. The plot was fine? But nothing was āhorrorā in my opinion. The characters were more bland than a box of saltine crackers. No depth, no arcs, no surprises. Sped up the audiobook to get through it faster.

A beautiful blend of the authorās personal experiences of growing up with a mother who attended a āboarding schoolā Native children were forced to live at, with historical facts about these āschoolsā. I recently watched a Canadian documentary about this topic, so I found it rather fascinating & heartbreaking. The author is also from Wisconsin, as am I, so I felt a connection to a lot of the locations mentioned.

I loved this chapter about Bolivia and the Ʊatitas, and also the mention of the Fontanelle Cemetery in Naples, Italy. In Brazil, we have a similar āworshipā of the anonymous dead; thirteen unidentified bodies that were found inside an elevator in the aftermath of the Joelma building fire. These anonymous bodies became known as the thirteen souls, and buried together in the cityās cemetery. The groundskeepers started noticing cries and waling coming from the graves, and believed it to be the victims crying out in pain from the fire that took their lives, so they decided to pour water over their graves to alleviate their suffering, and the wailing stopped. This incident started and the mystery surrounding the identity of the bodies started attracting many people, who believed that the 13 souls have the power to grant favors and miracles, in exchange for prayers and water.
