I was struggling with this book for the first 20% because of the stream of long sentences that felt hectic (like someone ranting to you about a story) but then I switched to audiobook in Spanish and hooooly shit what a difference it made. I’m enthralled in this story now.
I appreciate the translator for everything they did and they did a great job but since I’m Mexican and speak Spanish, hearing it has really made me connect with the story so much more. It really does feel like someone is recounting something that happened and it really feels so organic. There many moments when certain things are repeated again after a few pages which I thought was weird reading it but listening to it just reminds me of when that happens when you’re recounting a story and loop back around.
I know not everyone can experience this in audiobook or in Spanish, but if you can I definitely recommend it!

I am genuinely so happy that a lot more people are reading this book, thanks to the Pride Month read-along! I really enjoyed this book and hope y'all do too.
If y'all enjoyed Ace of Spades and the writing style, I definitely suggest y'all read more from this author. The atmosphere Faridah Abike-Iyimide creates in her books is so good. This was her debut novel, and I personally feel like her books have gotten stronger the more she grows as an author. She is truly one of my favorite authors!

“…she had the same overeager expression of having reached a goal, only to go chasing after a higher one. Never stopping to celebrate a single victory, because there was always something else to achieve; something better to chase.”
Oh, I fear this book is going to hit hard as an overachieving daughter and I am not prepared for it.
