This is a deeply unserious take given everything else going on in this book, but I would pay actual dollars to never have to hear the word "spliff" again.
Post from the If We Were Villains forum
This author loves the word spliff. Can someone please teach him a different way to smoke weed? 😂

First things first, this author is pro-isreal and has been proven to have stolen the premise of one of the games in this book without giving credit to the original creator (despite name-dropping several other games in this book). I wanted to DNF from the first mention of Dov, the IOF veteran from Isnotreal who is cheating on his wife with one of his students, but since this was a book club read, and I like to be an informed hater, I read the whole thing. The book does not get better. The writing was so overly pretentious that it was distracting. The author was definitely trying to flaunt her Harvard degree, but instead it was clear her favorite website is thesaurus.com. Everything after the creation of the initial game was so boring. There was way too many plot points and none of them were resolved in an interesting way. And the only character that I actually gave a shit about ended up spoiler alert dying in the most bullcrap way. I don't recommend this book for a multitude of reasons and I will be staying away from this author in the future. Free Palestine.

This was such a good read. While I don't need every little mystery solved while reading, it is very satisfying when the plot points are all wrapped up in neat little bows. The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because it took me a little too long to get a handle on all the different characters (There are 4 Peters and 2 John Pauls for example). But once I got everything straight, the story really kicked off. I also saw another review mention the title doesn't really fit the premise of the book, and I have to agree. Because of the title, I kept waiting for some kind of supernatural twist to happen, but there was none.

dnf. i got like 40% though but i just couldn't handle the abusive, cheating professor who's from israel. I also knew the end would be sad so it didn't seem worth finishing. the writing itself is good but the fact that israel is mentioned so much in the book makes me uncomfortable.

I expected this book to be more outright scary than it actually was. It ended up being a woman's slow decent into madness instead of a true ghost story. But very interesting all the same.
