wow! this one took me by surprise - I'd been putting it off for over a year since it's a thick literary family drama (aka: a chore to get through). The first 300 pages flew by - I annotated many passages, felt the realness of the sisters and their bond, their heartbreak and joy and human messiness. I had the rare reading experience of seeing on the page feelings and thoughts I thought were unique to me - and being reminded in the most beautiful way that none of us have ever had a unique emotional experience. I loved the theme that love is acceptance - that control, trying to change someone, or rejecting parts of someone leads to disunity and sickness. People (and love) thrive while being nurtured, not changed. To nurture, we must accept - and love - all parts.
That being said, the last 80ish pages really dragged. It took this from being an all time favorite to less than 5 stars. I still adored this reading experience though, and the Padavano sisters will stick with me for a long time.
