hey guys! iām planning out my reads for the rest of the year, in the aim of fulfilling a book bingo challenge i added to my storygraph in jan and honestly forgot abt until a couple of weeks ago LOL, (but i just looked thru my reads and updated and im ~67% through with the books ive already read without realizing which is pretty neat!)
anyway, one of the categories is 20th century speculative fiction, and while iām open to recs as well, i think iām probably going to use this as an excuse to (finally) pick up my first ursula k. le guin. so i wanted to ask if thereās any book i should start with in her collection of writing thatās essential/the perfect introduction to her writing. i was thinking one of her short story collections? only because iām not ready to commit to a full fledged series but let me know! what does everyone recommend?
also. is there any way to find a list of recs for 20th speculative fiction in general for my future reading, i looked thru the lists briefly before this making this but it was a VERY BASIC perusal so there might be one!

begging chloe gong to take a break from her success and go on a years long retreat in the woods (a la christopher mccandless) to hone in on her craft instead of churning books every single year because this? this was not it.
and after that years long retreat she should start writing historical romance because her dedication to history research is great and her romance is actually halfway compelling! (again. that thing about honing in on her writing ability and all) and pleaseeee take a step back from fantasy, mystery, and all other elements. my god.
i donāt want to get too much into it because god this book was a drag and a half, but certain plot points only emphasized the weakness of her character building because like i mentioned in my review of the first book, stripped to his bare bones orion is nothing but a cookie cutter book bf who āsmirks, flirts, and grinsā which came across even further in this one!! and AGAIN, rosalind does not face any on page tangible consequences for the issues she caused in the tvd duology, nor do we deeply explore her regret and guilt. the rest of these characters also just fall so flat! every single character evoked the same reaction within me as a piece of cardboard. the little tvd reunion we got wasnāt appreciated or needed it just cheapened the entire message of her previous books. the interesting political context of this book and the backgrounds of the characters are again sanitized for this sake of such ridiculous plot (genuinely what the hell is going on. how is in any of this plausible. every time i thought about it, i was like HOW are they even doing this?? nothing is properly explained weāre going off of vibes and duct tape. genuinely i mean it what the HELL is going on plot wise) and altogether since foul lady fortune was enjoyable but lacked substance, the sequel intended to build upon the aforementioned lack of substance was sooooo below par. there were a few lines (again her romance could compel if she took a step back and NURTURED HER CRAFT instead of pumping out books one after the other) that i enjoyed but overall, what a SLOG!
also i just want to say the statistics of rosalind having the same blood type as orion based PURELY on the fact that she has the same blood type as oliver and theyre siblings is a HEAVY HEAVYYYY gamble and not the obvious fact she made it seem. like siblings donāt magically get the same blood type itās based on ur parentsā blood type and as always the roulette that is genetics. im B+ and my brother is AB- and that is BECAUSE my mother is B- and my father is A+ like its possible to be the same but it just pissed me off that she made the assumption that it would be almost impossible for it not to be the case. esp considering they donāt actually SAY what blood type like he could be O- for all we know! thatās it rlly i just wanted to say that. i donāt play abt my blood and chloe gong needs to study up if she wants to impress me considering my stints in research labs and hospitals and my certifications.
anyway. now i will now be finishing my arc of her new book with my expectations properly through the floor š«”

i dont know what yall want me to say. yeah it was sweetie pie bc im established relationship fluff's biggest fan, but all of these characters should be dead narratively. which did indeed sour the whole thing. no matter how cute they were, this was definitely unneeded and the classiest cash grab possible. (she did write two hundred pages so like an fruitful effort on her part for the cash grab. but fan service and needless wish fulfillment nonetheless) i reiterate chloe gong take a fucking BREAK from writing, focus on improving ur craft, then do a dramatic genre shift and start writing historical romance i beg of u my god.

the world if chloe gong hung her fantasy desires up, took a break, and committed to a full fledged romanceā¦we could really have it allā¦

My support worker had a bookish question:
Are playlists at the beginning of books meant to be listened to during certain parts of the book or whenever? Because I got the new ana huang book and it has a playlist
Also , do we like them ? Because that plus art will definitely make me buy a book

So... I recently got approved for an audiobook on NetGally. I've never been big on audiobooks since I get distracted easily but I thought about giving it another shot as I actually got through a podcast and actually loved it (something I rarely do).
I actually love the book so far and I got the ebook, but I cant seem to focus... I dont know if its the narrator or the book or even just my environment but I really want to finish this with the audiobook as I got it from NetGally... does anyone have any tips? Any advice? Anything at all?
Thanks

āEveryone has their own loneliness to bear, and so we canāt expect anyone to take ours away. At least thereās comfort in knowing weāre alone together.ā
i picked this up because i heard translated korean fiction, queer, vampire, murder case, and i saw that GORGEOUS cover and went happy halloween to me!
āthe midnight shiftā touches on being queer, being lonely, vampires and at the end of the day, what it means to be human. the queer loneliness being such a huge part of this book and how it applies to vampirism was sooo fascinating and. the sloooooowwwwww slooowwwww unraveling of the mystery Ough. really good. one of the main characters being a vampire hunter being a vampire herself with a messy sapphic situationship that fucked her up for years to come. yeahh <333
i want to say it took me a while to get into this book, i think the writing style at first wasnāt it for me which i donāt normally comment on translated works, because i dont know if its the actual writing style in korean or the translation itself but it was enough of a block that it took me ~50% to get truly invested so thereās that. but once we were in, we were IN. i really truly loved the povs we were in the present timelines with suyeon and nanju interposed with violetteās past expanding on her role in the present yeah. yeahhhhhhhhhh.
everything about this book was good it just took me so long to read and get invested that my overall feeling is just how happy i am that i finished it and itās stopped burning a hole in my currently reading. but i did quite enjoy my read, and i loveeddd exploring the themes OF this novel which to my literary analysis oriented brain is the more important part and i mean again. LOOOOOOKK AT THAT COVERRR so. 3.5 stars!
