I don't particularly hate friends to lovers but this one isn't hitting for me at all. I will rant a little and people who love this book a lot can skip my rant.
I have read a couple of friends to lovers trope in books that didn't particularly revolve around romance and they STILL pulled it off for me much better than this one. I found the trope better in 'The Bright Years' where I could genuinely see the yearning and innocence of friendship (and I cried in that book for so many reasons be it happiness or sadness). It felt natural and not pushed down my throat.
Here I am 40% in and I just don't care about the main couple.
A lot of 'saying' but no showing of chemistry. Using flowery language and language of martyrdom isn't gonna make me emotionally connected to these characters. It might have worked back in 2021 when I was new to Romantasy.
I am literally TRYING to see the chemistry at this point. I see the potential when they have friendly banters but literally their entire relationship is co-dependant.
The story being narrated from Grey's perspective is getting annoying cause AGAIN the author is continuously using her to TALK about how strong the bond between Grey and Kier is. They are just co-dependant and I don't like that in romance so that's another negative for me.
I am sticking around just for the plot because yeah I had not seen the reveal coming and I want to see how the plot progresses.

"Thankfully, Maroziaâs beauty was a cup that threatened to overrun; this small defect would not lower the level of liquid but merely keep it from spilling over the rim."
I'm obsessed with each description of Marozia's beauty.
