I love it when books feel like they come directly from the fictional world they are about! The well thought out and extensive world building of the Shadowhunters universe has always been really impressive to me and this book is basically a manifestation of all that. It is not really a necessary read, I think most of its contents you will know after reading TMI and TID, but I like having all the lore in one place. And the illustrations are beautiful!
I had already used the Codex several times as a reference during my TMI and TID rereads and was excited to finally read it in its entirety. I'm not gonna lie, it was a bit tedious to read, but to me, being able to adapt that dry textbook style just speaks to Cassandra Clare's abilities as a writer. I just wish that we had gotten a few more of Clary, Simon and Jace's little notes throughout, they added some necessary humour and made it a lot easier to get through the codex.
[Book 10/25 in my 2026 reread of all the Shadowhunter Chronicles in anticipation of The Wicked Powers]

"'I see that even as the world plunges into darkness and peril, you two stand around discussing your love lives.'"
Now if that isn't an apt description of the entire Shadowhunter Chronicles😂 At least Cassie Clare is self-aware (wow, that rhymed).
