A collection of the pilot books for popular series, for those of us who love to follow a character's journey for as long as an author will let us! Some of the below series have heavily debated starting points and book read orders--in those cases the pilot was selected based on what seems to be the most popular approach.

I am afraid that I am only 20 pages in and obsessed with this art style. I'm so excited that this finally came in from the library. I haven't read manga in so long that I'm still getting used to reading right to left, since I typically read Western-style graphic novels that read left to right. All in good time!

I knew I was going to enjoy this book, because I used to enjoy watching Santore's content before I quit YouTube. I expected a good time listening to a foul-mouthed guy talk about plants. What I didn't expect was something inspiring and hopeful, and yet that's what I got (but don't worry, there's also tons of cussing).
Santore feels like a throwback to the early days of botany, when you didn't have to go to an expensive university and spend years memorizing things to call yourself a botanist. Botany used to be a bunch of random people finding plants and saying "hey check out this cool thing I found." Maybe they'd take a cutting, or paint it. Maybe they'd send specimens to a museum. Maybe the plant grew in their yard, or the forest they walked in every day, and they could record observations about its life cycle. Importantly, basically anyone could do it (although of course, the rich white men were the ones who got lauded for it and got to name things, but they relied on people from all walks of life to send them plants and observations).
This book feels like a call to a return of the days of citizen scientists. All of us can observe the world around us, think about what we see, and share those observations. We can learn from what grows around us, even in the cracks of the sidewalk of the most built-up city.
This is also a book that's very thoughtful about how humans are part of the living world, how there's not a true distinction between our cities and suburbs and "nature." And it takes a nuanced approach to "invasive" plants that feels far more common-sensed than anything I've read so far.
Anyway, this book is great. I'm glad I listened to the audio, because Santore is a fucking delight, but I'm also going to buy a physical copy to refer back to.
