Starting this series in my early twenties for the first time and eating up every crumb. I can only imagine how much I would have LOVED to read this as a kiddo. Something tells me Percy will heal my inner child as I continue đ„čđ

I struggle with mental illnesses and have for as long as I can remember. But especially lately (the past several months) Iâve been struggling to enjoy anything, including things I love, like video games, paint by numbers, etc. Or with books that sound exactly like something I would like but I just canât seem to get my brain to get into it.
I listened to the Hunger Games trilogy again recently because I know those books are some that I always love and I can rely on that love. But right now Iâm really struggling to get into books I was excited about, like We by Yevgeny Zamyatin or the Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri. I really want to read/listen to these and enjoy them but I just canât seem to connect with them. Itâs making me want to focus on re-reads but I also really want to fall in love with new stories.
Anyway, moral of the story- what are some books you can always count on to be enjoyable even when depression or mental illness sucks the joy out of life?
And do any of you have strategies or tricks that youâve found help you connect back to books and hobbies that you love when struggling with depression?

I really wanted to love this book but ugh the plot just really fell off for me đ«!!
For starters, I LOVED the worldbuilding, and the pacing at the start of the book. It was incredible, captivating, and so well put-together that my expectations for this story flew threw the roof. I loved how dynamic these cultures are and how AirĂłn soaked in everything that was new to him. I loved how we felt so on edge with him in fear of what would happen, as the arrangement totally threw his life plans off it's course. Everything we learn about his family and history had me intruiged, especially with everything he was hiding in the kingdom. It's safe to say that the story really had me hooked.
Unfortunately the longer things went on the more my hopes for this book slowly diminished. I wasn't too much of a fan of the overall strategy he went with, I felt like the story dragged on a bit because I knew damn well he wouldn't try to kill Tallu- but that's the worst part!! The romance was somehow lacking and also super rushed? He fell for him so quickly and for lowkey no reason... I feel like with his entire life living up to this moment he wouldn't sway so easily. Especially if he was raised as an assassin. I was hoping for more banter and drama between them considering all the politics going on, but it felt like a constant repeat of the same bland sort of exchange. Clearly there's more to Tallu than his reputation, but in my opinion, he didn't really give us anything to work with to form a solid opinion on him. Just that he's not as bad as he seems for whatever reason.
The best parts of this book were when AirĂłn delt with the culture and lifestyle of the Southern Imperium. The writing itself is honestly amazing and the quality of the audiobook was great too. I feel like if you go into this without expecting a romance it could be way more interesting, but then again, isn't that what we're here for?? It just didn't hit the marks I thought it would!
