How to Kill a Witch: The Patriarchy's Guide to Silencing Women

How to Kill a Witch: The Patriarchy's Guide to Silencing Women

Zoe Venditozzi & Claire Mitchell

Nothing brings people together like a common enemy, and witches were the greatest enemy of all. Scotland, 1563: Crops failed. People starved. And the Devil's influence was stronger than ever—at least, that's what everyone believed. If you were a woman living in Scotland during this turbulent time, there was a very good chance that you, or someone you knew, would be tried as a witch. During the chaos of the Reformation, violence against women was codified for the first time in the Witchcraft Act—a tool of theocratic control with one chilling to root out witches and rid the land of evil. What followed was a dark and misogynistic chapter in history that fanned the flames of witch hunts across the globe, including in the United States and beyond. In How to Kill a Witch, Zoe Venditozzi and Claire Mitchell, hosts of the popular Witches of Scotland podcast, unravel the grim yet absurdly bureaucratic process of identifying, accusing, trying, and executing women as witches. With sharp wit and keen feminist insight, they reveal the inner workings of a patriarchal system designed to weaponize fear and oppress women. This captivating (and often infuriating) account, which weaves a rich tapestry of trial transcripts, witness accounts, and the documents that set the legal grounds for the witch hunts, exposes how this violent period of history mirrors today's struggles for justice and equality. How to Kill a Witch is a powerful, darkly humorous reminder of the dangers of superstition, bias, and ignorance, and a warning to never forget the past… while raising the question of whether it could ever happen again.

2.8 stars..? just very close to three

ok listen I had some fun moments, some of the jokes were really charming, some moments of the characters were endearing, and grumpy x sunshine is one of my favorite dynamics.. but this one just didn't click with me the more I read it

first of all the writing style is definitely not my thing, the two main characters feel so detached and flat for me I wasnt invested in them, so any cute moments I was just like ehhh.. this is definitely a characters based story, but the plot just doesn't feel significant or had something going for it? it feels like each chapter is a filler episode or something. it's like if I were to write a story from scratch without planning and see where it goes. there's also no stakes, i think

the worldbuilding is also.. a little unpolished to me, because it felt like very on the spot worldbuilding exposition thats being explained whenever an item/something is needed

I am conflicted, on one side the writing reminds me of a fanfic + gacha videos, I also rolled my eyes at the description of the villains chiseled jaw, symmetrical face, and thick eyebrows. of course he's hot and brooding and a murderer and protective and jealous, which is...a lot of mmc lemme tell you that

but it's kind of fun, it's kind of funny (kind of), we'll see how i think of this

    4.5/5 stars !!

THIS WAS SO BEAUTIFUL AND MAGICAL!! I absolutely loved the writing style, and it truly felt like I was pushed into a fairytale, it also felt like I was 10 years old watching the tinkerbell movies again! THESE TWO ARE MY BELOVED and the ending is something I expected because I watched the movie but it made me sad regardless! I enjoyed the whimsical world building alongside the loveable characters! the plot was fairly simple but it didnt make it any less enjoyable! I love them so much ♡

ALSOO I didn't think I'd get a sapphic representation with the two close friends of Clarion and I was veryvery pleased to get them, they were so sweet

anyway im rewatching the movie now
