This had to be one of my best reads of the year. It gripped me from the first page. The word building was great, the chapters were a perfect length and the author really knows how to write about darker themes without it feeling too heavy. But what really makes this book special are the characters. I felt for them, related to them, feared for them. Everything about this book felt like the start of something amazing, and I am so excited for more.

I think this is the first time that I feel outsmarted by a book in this way. I love political intrigue and this book was so clever about it, but I found myself confused many times. The writing and overall story still got me going and I had a good time. The ending got me good, I definitely wasn’t expecting that, it was brutal and I haven’t been able to forget about it. Rating this is difficult, because I understand what the author is going for and why everything needed to be so cruel, but it affected my enjoyment and satisfaction.
